Students were very interested in our look into Alberta's historical site "Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump."

We watched a short "Travel Alberta" video to show the site to the students so they can visualize where the buffalo were run off the cliff hundreds of years ago. They had a lot of interesting questions and we look forward into further study of this historical site.

Literacy

This week students have been working on their "Publishing" step of our writer's workshop. They've used their editing checklist to edit their stories for Capitalization, End Punctuation, Spelling and Organization. After self and peer editing, students met with their teachers to read, discuss and complete final edits together.

Math

Playing a variety of math games helps to build and strengthen students mental math strategies for multiplication.

Using bread tags to create arrays as one strategy to help solve multiplication questions.

Question: Where do we see arrays in our daily lives? For example, egg cartons would represent 2x6=12 or 6x2=12.

Social Studies

Students participated in an interactive activity to locate first Alberta and then the other provinces and territories in Canada

Question: Can you label the 10 provinces and 3 territories with your family?

The Grade 4's used their knowledge of non-fiction text features to locate information in an Atlas to learn about Alberta. They used the Index to locate Alberta's flag and some of our provincial symbols, such as the "Wild Rose" and "Great Horned Owl".

Question: Can you explain the meaning of the coat of arms in the centre of Alberta's flag?

French

Students have been learning new vocabulary including winter words and colours through songs, visuals and activities. They are working on writing winter poems in French along with a visual of a winter scene. They have been excited to translate "winter fun" words that connect to their lives, including snowmen, sledding, hockey and shoveling.
