QUESTION:What connections have you made with the story? Can you give a summary of what the first 3 chapters are about? Anything that really stands out from the story that you remember?
We are continuing our study on non-fiction text and focusing on ZOOMING-IN to "Non-Fiction Text Features", such as table of contents, index, captions and glossary. We will be learning about the 5 reading powers designed by Adrienne Gear over the next month including:
1. Zooming in
2. Questions/Making Inferences
3. Determining Importance
4. Connecting
5. Transforming
These Reading Powers fill our brains as we read. We drew a visual to teach these comprehension strategies.
MATH/ART
Students are learning to work in groups as we explore using patterns to solve word problems. They are focusing on helping and encouraging each other by each bringing forth their strength. We are emphasizing how everyone has strengths and challenges and how working together can help improve in different ways.
QUESTION- What worked well in your group? Do you like working in groups? Why or why not?
Students used their knowledge of patterns to create a Autumn themed pattern leaf. They brainstormed various color patterns and used paint and sharpie to complete their art project.
Number Talks
"Number talks (or "math talks") are short discussions among a teacher and students about how to solve a particular mental math problem. The focus is not on the correct answer, but on all the possible methods of finding the answer."
QUESTION: What number doesn't belong to a certain pattern or criteria and why? Did someone come up with an answer that you didn't think of? Can there be more than one answer or an explanation that really made sense?
SCIENCE
Students are now confident naming at least one natural resource that we use to benefit our lives, such as sunlight. We are now categorizing them into renewable and non-renewable resources. Students were introduced to a "Legend" and used a legend to add renewable and non-renewable resources to their Natural Resources assignment.
QUESTION- Can your child tell you at least one renewable resource and one non-renewable resource that we use and how it benefits our quality of life?
SOCIAL
QUESTION: What can you tell by this map?
QUESTION: What do you imagine were some of the basic need of the first people who lived in the territory we go to school in? What natural resources are there/were their on the land that could have been used to meet these basic needs?
A different perspective:

wild-rose
QUIESTIONS: How did the First Nations people relate to the land? What can we learn from their stories?
FRENCH
Les Couleurs de l'automne

QUESTION:Quelles Couleurs sont dans ton feuilles (what colors are in your leaves)?
Using Google Translator

QUESTION: What are the rules for using google translate?
What words did you look up for to complete your poem or from "Les Mots" page? How do you say the words in French?
