Upcoming Events

*Report Cards sent home Thursday, January 30th
*No School Friday, January 31st (PD Day)
*Please return any overdue library books. We will continue to allow students to visit the library to sign out books from Monday-Thursday in the mornings

Homework
* Please log onto your Google Slide presentation to complete at least one region in Alberta to describe its geographical features. (See Social Studies section)

Literacy

Students have been working on writing the beginning of their stories during "Writer's Workshop". They have planned and focused on character development, adding adjectives, and starting with an interesting beginning. Now they are focusing on writing complete sentences to write the beginning of their stories.

QUESTION: Can you tell what components that are included in the beginning of your story? What problem are you going to introduce?

Math

We continued learning about various strategies to subtract large numbers. We practiced manipulating numbers to make the calculations easier.

Question: Can you explain how this strategy can make the subtraction process more simple?

 5000  - 1      4999
-2346          - 2346
                             +1

Social Studies

Students have been researching about the following geographical features for various regions in Alberta:

    1. Landforms
    2. Climate
    3. Bodies of Water
    4. Vegetation
    5. Animal Life
    6. Natural Resources

**The next step will be to make connections to the areas of land they are researching.

Question: Has your family been to a body of water in the Grasslands Region? For example, "The Bow River".

Science

Why are we learning about simple machines? Explain how are they important in our everyday life!

Can you think of at least three examples of an inclined place and a wedge?

French/Art

We are using art techniques to introduce and add winter French words to our "Les Mos" dictionaries. Students are focusing on 5 different art techniques while drawing and labeling new French vocabulary.

Well, we made it through one of the coldest weeks yet with NO outdoor recess, and we must say that you all handled it fabulously!

Homework- only if not finished in class
Literacy- My Weekend Journal, Ollie's Odyssey Predictions
Math- Check-in on Monday on subtracting numbers in the thousands. Practice at home.
Science- Bill Nye Science Guy Reflection
Social-Alberta map with regions and 3 cities or towns mapped onto it

Literacy
We have began reading a new book together: Ollie's Odyssey

Question: What did you predict would happen once the Ballerina was "taken" from Zozo and the carnival shut down? Once we read the next two chapters, do you still think that your prediction is correct? Why or why or?

Sometimes books refer to other well known stories like fairy tales.

Next we started to create a slide for each place we chose and are writing about the 6 different types of geography for each region. Give an example for each type of geography and then write a connection or tell a story that relates to you or your family.

Math

Target to 3500

Activity: Play Target 3500 to practice subtracting numbers in the thousands

Mental math strategies

Question: How does knowing all the ways to make 10 help with mental math in addition and subtraction?

Health
Our school wide plan includes looking out for the well-being of each other so that we all feel responsible, safe, cared for and happy at school. We have had a weekly meeting on Fridays to talk about issues that are of concern to students and how we are feeling about it. We discuss what we can do in situations where we may not feel safe and how we can resolve them in a positive manner.

Questions: How are you feeling at school? Is there something that you need help with?

The whole school is building a wall with our friendship pledge.

Question: What did you put on your hand and why? "My hands are for _______."

January 7-10

Classroom Blog- Grade 4

Welcome back! We hope you all enjoyed the holidays.

Homework- only if not finished in class
Literacy- My Winter Holidays, Story Beginnings
Math-p.90 3 questions (Subtracting Numbers in the 1000s) See under math.
Art-finish sketch
Science-
1. Draw a diagram and label
2. Finish analysis (challenge, materials, observation and results)

Literacy

Students continued to work in their writer's workshop folders to investigate interesting story beginnings. We signed out a bunch of new books from the library and students were asked to read the beginnings and decipher what category it fit under. Students enthusiastically worked in partners to find all 6 types of story beginnings and if it didn't fit into a category, they placed it in "other". Our goal is to use these interesting beginnings when writing our own stories to avoid using "Once Upon a Time" which should only be used for fairy tales, and "One Day" which is not very exciting.

Questions: Which type of beginnings did you find when reading through the books? Was there one particular beginning you found more often than others?

Math
Subtracting Numbers in the 1000s.

Questions:
1) What strategies do you find helpful to solve subtraction problems (ex. using base ten blocks,  borrowing starting from the right, using a number line, mental math or do you have another method?
2) What can you do to check if your answer is correct? What can you do to tell if your answer is reasonable?

Science
I can explain how rollers can be used to move an object, and demonstrate the use of rollers in a practical situation.

Questions: Why were we huddled around this groups experiment? What did they try that was different from the rest of the testing centres?

Question: Were you able to successfully complete the roller challenge? Why or why not? Why was Ms. Malone pulling this student in the recycle bin? What was she trying to prove?

Art/French
C'est hiver It's winter!

Questions:
1)Quelle saison est-ce? Quelle couleurs voyez-vous en hiver? (What season is it? What colors do you see in the winter?).

2)What new techniques or skills did you learn in this guided drawing?
