LITERACY
We started a new novel this week: " There's an Owl in the Shower." So far we learned that "Borden Watson’s father is out of job, and it’s all the spotted owls’ fault. The birds are endangered, which means loggers, like Mr. Watson, are no longer allowed to cut down trees."  We are also introduced to to the life of a family of owls who remain in the forest. (Parents note that some content has been taken out by the teacher)

QUESTION:How does Borden feel about the White spotted owl?

Why did his dad lose his job as a cutter; what does endangered mean?

What do you do when you are reading and suddenly you are not sure why the character is doing what they are doing? What did we do when someone asked why Borden was upset with the Owl's after he talked to the judge?

How is this story connected to our Science topic of Waste and Our World or  Global Warming?

We were introduced to the kid friendly search engine, Kiddle, during Science which will support us when we research our Wonders: www.kiddle.com

QUESTION:How did we use this search engine to clarify questions about our story? What did we find out about owls and how far they can turn their head? If you don't know get on Kiddle and look it up.

We have been learning about "Non-Fiction Text Features" this week. A few of these include:
- Title
- Table of Contents
- Glossary
- Index
- Headings
- Photographs
- Caption

QUESTION: Can your child identify three non-fiction text pictures

September writing: Each month we will do a piece of writing to demonstrate our strengths and monitor our growth.

QUESTION:Which hat did you choose to write about? What was your experience of the Terry Fox run?

MATH
Students have been working hard to complete patterning problem solving questions. They've used pictures, diagrams, and charts to record their thought process. We are learning to show our "math brains" on paper in as many ways as possible.

QUESTION- Can your child create a patterning question for you to solve?

SCIENCE

We looked at our "Wonders" from our "Book Look" last week about Waste and Our World. Students have lots of questions that they will be able to research: Why do worms help the compost? Why do we have so many wild fires? Why cant we just not litter? What’s the green house effect? Why isn't there a different material for making plastic? (besides oil)

We also looked at current events and how they are connected to our Waste and our World topic

QUESTION:How can you make a difference at home, school or in your community to help decrease the amount of waste in our world? Discuss this with your family.

This week we introduced various Natural Resources and are beginning to explore the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources. We created a list of more than 10 natural resources that exist on our planet.

QUESTION: Can your child tell you the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources?

FRENCH

Mme Lytviak a acheté (bought) quelque chose au marché fermier (Farmer's Market) et nous avons chanté une chanson (sang a song) de les couleurs de l'automne (of the colors of Fall) pour inpsire notre poeme (our poem): "Les Couleur de l'automne."
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4cu1S4peq3I

September 16-20

Welcome to Room 18 and 19
Classroom Blog

Thank you for all who attended our parent, student and teacher conferences this week. We enjoyed meeting families and getting to learn more about our students. If you were not able to book an appointment we would still love to have the opportunity to meet with you and your child.

Homework will be posted here. This will only consist of work that has not been completed during class time each week. There is no homework this weekend.

This week the students worked hard to finish their work to display and share at conferences.

Please make reading a daily routine. Support students to become independent readers by reading to them and having them read to you. You can go to the Public Library where everyone can get a free Library card. There are so many reasons to read. Read for the joy of it, to learn something new or explore a passion!

Reminders: Thursday Sept. 26 is our Terry Fox Run. The envelopes to collect donations was sent home. Our goal is to raise $2000 and if we do, Mrs. Baker has volunteered to dye her hair whatever colour the students vote on.

LITERACY
Choosing the right books to read is very important. We focused this week on how to choose appropriate books using the "IPICK rap.

Students had their library orientation on Thursday so they can now start taking books out to read both at school or at home. Students who would like to take part in the home reading program by taking leveled book are welcome to talk to us so we can get them started.

How do you know if you are picking the right book for you? What's the 5 finger rule?

SCIENCE
We have begun our recycling project for Ranchlands school. Students will be collecting the green recycle bins, organizing and ensuring there has not been garbage accidentally recycled. Our first week of collection went well, very busy but we are going to work together to create the most effective and efficient system possible.

Ask your child to tell you the process of recycling a plastic bottle. They were SO FASCINATED with the process and had a lot of interesting questions that we can't wait to explore.

MATH
We have been learning about INCREASING PATTERNS this week. Students filled out a hundreds chart and  created three different patterns using three different colours. They then had to explain the pattern rule on the back. They worked in partners to try and identify each others patterns.

For example: "My pattern starts at 7 and increases by three each time"

Can you create a pattern at home and ask someone in your family to try and guess the
PATTERN RULE?

We continued solving our Apple Problem from last week to model the expectations for work in Problem Solving:
1) Label the page and question number  (if from text book) or write down the problem.
2) Show your work with pictures, words and numbers.
3) Write down the solution.
Next week the children will explore solving math problems in their math book.

FRENCH
We explored the book Patate Pourrie, which was brought in by a student. We continued making connections between what we know in French, similar English words and pictures to make sense of the story. We used google translate to check on one word we weren't sure of.

Look below. What do you think "J'ai gagne!" or "PFFF!" means?

What is your favorite colour in French (Quelle est votre couleur preferee)? We used coloured egg shakers to practice learning, singing and saying colours in French. We also took our learning outdoors to explore "Les Couleur de l'Automne. Quelle couleur as-tu vu (What colors did you see)?

September 9-13

Welcome to Room 18/19
Classroom Blog

We have had an exciting start to our year. The students are settling into the routines of the classroom and meeting new friends. Ms. Lytviak and Ms. Malone are looking forward to a great year of learning together.

We will post weekly about what we are working on in the classroom so you can connect with your child and learn from them what we are exploring in the classroom.

Homework will be posted here. This will only consist of work that has not been completed during class time each week.

1. Paragraph writing- Students have had the week to write 4 paragraphs to teach others about themselves. We will be editing and completing our writing projects next week. If they brought their journal home, they have been asked to finish this for Monday.

2. Self-Portraits- 2 self portraits complete for Monday.

LITERACY

Students began the year with a focus on "Who Am I". This is a great way for teachers and peers to get to know more about each other in a creative way. We brainstormed idea, made a plan and used our plan to write paragraphs.

Can you explain the "Hamburger Method" of paragraph writing to someone in your family? How does it help to organize your ideas?

MATH

We have an extremely diverse population at Ranchlands which is wonderful when we need data to create a graph. We asked students what language they speak at home an were able to create a bar graph using this information.

Students can you recall at least three languages other than English that students speak at home?

We have been identifying and creating patterns in the classroom. We will begin each unit with important vocabulary that the students will need to know to be successful in understanding class discussions and using math language.

Students can you explain PATTERN RULE, ATTRIBUTE, and PATTERN CORE?

SCIENCE

The Grade 4 students will be taking on the recycling responsibilities for Ranchlands school. In direct correlation to the "Waste in our World" unit, we will be collecting all recycling from around the school, ensuring the correct materials are going into the green bins, all while learning and exploring the whole recycling process.

This week students read a variety of books on this topic and recorded some WOW's and WONDER's that they found interesting.

FRENCH

Bonjour! Comment ca va?

Students have been learning basic conversation and practicing with each other and their teachers- and they sound great singing this song!

Students can you ask your parents how they are and teach them how to respond? Ca va bien, tries bien, mal, pas mal, ca va...
watch

Students are learning to make connections between French words and context (pictures, familiar English words, gestures, and expressions).

Students, what new words have you learned from our stories, song, conversations or added to your "Les Mots" page from the magazines ?

Familiar books are a great starting point to make connections and build vocabulary. "The Hungry Caterpillar" in French introduces days of the week, numbers, fruits and a starting point to colors. We used it to inspire a math problem by first finding out who wants to have an apple (Qui veux une pomme?) and who wants to have a plum (Qui veux one prune?). Mrs Lytviak bought these fruits from the Marche Fermier (Farmer's market) but did she buy enough to share with the whole class?

Students: Can you tell your parents what our Apple Poblem was, how we solved it and what the solution was?
How high can you count in French: un, deux, trois, quatre, cinq, six, sept, suit, neuf, dix, onze...

ART

https://vimeo.com/38247060

Student's: What did you learn by watching Austin's Butterfly? What are some of the rules we came up with for critiquing other people art work?

Students: How did you use the feedback you got from your self-portrait critique to help you in your second drawing? Do your parents have any feedback? What else might help you use your scientist eye to see and draw yourself more accurately? We will continue on Monday!

We hope you have a great weekend!
